Inspired by the Dance-A-Thon last year and wanting to do more, Nathan Dias from San Francisco had a brilliant idea.  In August Nathan hosted “Swing Dance For Life” in the Bay Area; an event aimed at raising money for cancer research inspired by, and dedicated to, the Dance-A-Thon.  In only five weeks Nathan planned, organized and ran an event that drew nearly 200 people and raised $10,000!!!

Inspired by the cause, Nathan reached out to the local scene and was greeting with truly heartwarming support.  From the local instructors donating their time and dance skills to the crew of volunteers who went above and beyond, in just a short time the community rallied together to put on a fun event in support of cancer research.

One of the most inspiring parts of the event was the commemoration booth Nathan and his team set up.  Participants were encouraged to visit the booth and create collages personally dedicated to the people in their lives touched by cancer.  The personal touch really connected the participants with the event and made it special.  The collages created at “Swing Dance For Life” will be displayed at this year’s Dance-A-Thon event, next to a booth where you can create your own collage.  Participants are encouraged to bring pictures and memorabilia they would like to display in the collage.  You can take your collage home or donate it to the Dance-A-Thon’s collection.

We were really touched by the support and enthusiasm expressed by Nathan and the Bay area dance community.  The goal of the Dance-A-Thon is to use some of the amazing energy our community has and channel it into supporting cancer research.  We have all been touched by cancer in some way, and the Dance-A-Thon is an outlet to do something, to help make a difference in the world.  A big thank you goes out from our hearts to Nathan and his volunteer team!!
